Keeping It Simple
Bottles
In the early days 150ml bottles are great for smaller feeds. Then, as baby's tummy grows and he is able to
consume more milk the 240ml or 250ml bottles will meet your needs throughout the first year.
Depending on your preference you can also choose between the Happy Baby Steadiflow Wide Neck bottles or
more traditional Slimline design. Lots of Mums like the wide neck bottles as it is easy to pour or spoon in formula.
Both are very comfortable to hold and also very easy to clean and sterilise.
Handy Tip!
Coming home from hospital is a busy time already so make sure you have enough bottles (and teats)
on hand that you will be able to spend less time sterilising and more time getting baby and Mum settled. As many
babies are feeding at least every 3-4 hours it would be ideal to have 6-8 bottles on hand.
Teats
As breastfeeding is not for everybody, there are various flow rates available in teats to assist with baby making the
transition from breast to bottle. Generally baby starts with a Slow Flow teat and as his sucking becomes more
efficient you will move to medium and then fast or variable flow rates.
Similar to soothers, teats are available in Orthodontic or Cherry Shapes. Babies tend to have a preference for one
shape so if you find he is not transitioning well to bottle feeding with the original teat you have chosen, try the next
feed with the alternate shape.
Handy Tip! Variable flow teats are also great for thicker formulas ie, Reflux formulas, that tend to clog up the top
of the teats with the other flow rates.
Soothers
When you first arrive home from hospital with your baby, the first few days can be quite overwhelming to say the
least! As babies have a natural urge to suck, many parents offer baby a soother to help settle and comfort them.
Some babies tend to prefer one shape over another, cherry or orthodontic, or Latex or Silicone. Every baby is
different!
Many babies prefer cherry shaped, natural latex soothers, as the shape and superior softness feels most like
Mum's nipple and is therefore the soother most widely accepted by babies in Australia. They are available in
Premature, Small, Medium, Large and Extra large, so all sizes accommodate the growing babies.
Handy Tip! Glow in the dark soothers are handy if your baby loses the soother in the night, as you or baby can
easily find the soother, and thankfully you can both get some sleep!
Solids - Smart Portions® Feeding Range - A fresh approach to feeding baby
It is an exciting time when baby starts on solid foods. It is also a time when you want to make sure you have all the
bits and pieces you will need to prepare and store food and feed baby with.
When Baby first starts on solids it is recommended that food is cooked and then pureed. In order to save time and
money it's smart to prepare pureed fruits and vegetables in batches and then freeze in small portions. The Happy
Baby® food Freezer Trays come in a 3 pack, with lids so you can prepare plenty of meal options in advance.
The Click 'n' Go Bowl is fantastic for feeding baby in the first year. The bowl comes with a removable suction base
so it is perfect for preventing babies from tipping and spilling food. Food prepared in the freezer food trays fits
perfectly in to the portioned sections, making heating and serving a breeze, and the spoon tip changes colour to let
you know if the food is hot before feeding baby.
When you are out and about the Snack Pots and First Cups are a must! The Snack Pots are a great size for all
sorts of snacks and will fit neatly into any nappy bag. The Snack Pots also fit 2 portions from the food Freezer Trays!
The First Cup has 2 handles and the softest spout about so baby will love to chew on it! The best thing about this
cup is that is works on baby's natural chewing action, simply bite or squeeze the spout to release the fluid. This
makes it easy for baby when starting to grasp the concept of self-feeding from a cup.
Handy Tip! Once frozen, you can transfer the food portions from your Freezer Trays into labelled freezer bags for
storage. This will enable you to continue cooking and freezing up new foods into the trays at a time that is
convenient to you, making life easier later. By having lots of different food portions frozen in bags, you can
simply create different combinations for each meal to keep it exciting!
For example:
Lunch: 1 x pumpkin portion, 1 x spinach portion
Dinner: 1 x potato and 1 x carrot portion, and 1 x apple portion for dessert
This saves you time and keeps baby happy!
