According to their purposes, there are five main types of cookies:
Technical cookies. These are cookies that are required for the operation of a website. They include, for example, cookies that enable users to log into secure areas of a website or to purchase goods online.
Analytical cookies. These cookies allow the tracking and analysis of users’ website performance. They allow website operators to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around a website when they are using it. This helps to improve the way a website works, for example, by ensuring that users find what they are looking for easily.
Customization cookies. These cookies allow the user to access the service with certain general features which are predefined according to a number of criteria in the user’s terminal (e.g. language, type of browser, regional settings). These are used to recognise a user when returning to a website. This enables website operators to personalise the content for a user, greet him by name and remember his preferences.
Advertising cookies: These cookies allow an efficient management of advertising included in a website, app or platform, according to criteria such as the content or the frequency in which the adverts are shown.
Behavioural advertising cookies. These cookies allow an efficient management of advertising included in a website app or platform, and store information about the users’ performance through the monitoring of their browsing habits. They record the visit to a website, the pages visited and the links followed by users. This information is used to make a website and the advertising displayed on it more relevant to the users’ interests.
